Campbellton (NB) – Dr. Surya Master, retired surgeon, recently made a generous donation of $101,692.75 to the Friends of Healthcare Foundation. Part of this amount will be used to offer bursaries to Restigouche students who pursue studies in health-related programs.
Dr. Master was born on May 12, 1929 in Mombasa, Kenya, East Africa. He obtained his M.B., B.S. from Grant Medical College, Bombay, in 1954 where he also undertook a surgical internship in 1954-1955. From 1956 to 1963, he practiced as a family physician in Uganda, East Africa. In 1963, he served a term as President of the Uganda Medical Society.
From 1964 to 1966, Dr. Master undertook a residency in general surgery first in Uganda, then in Glasgow, Scotland. From 1967 to 1972, he was a lecturer in Surgery at Makerere University in Uganda. From 1973 to 1975, Dr. Master worked at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax as senior resident and chief resident in surgery. In 1975, he moved to Campbellton where he held a private practice until he retired.
Since coming to Campbellton, Dr. Master’s appointments have included: Chair of the Credentials Committee and Chief of Surgery and member of the Medical Advisory Committee at the Restigouche Health Services Corporation, which is now Vitalité Health Network, Restigouche Zone. Dr. Master is the author of a number of papers which have been published.
Dr. Master is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada; the American College of Surgeons; and the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Scotland.
According to Ms. Nancy Nicol-Lavoie, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Healthcare Foundation, this is the largest donation ever made to the Foundation by an individual.
